[It's easier to lose himself in a fictional world than it is to confront the reality of the situation. They're trapped in some horrible place and encouraged to kill each other. Mother is here, but she doesn't recognize him. Reading isn't exactly going to solve any of those problems, but it'll make them seem a little less important for a little bit and he's fine with that. He can deal with everything later.
Eventually he'll look up though, when he realizes that he probably should be doing something useful instead of getting lost in stories.
